So we now know where we can find some natural peanut butters but an even healthier alternative would be to upgrade to other natural nut butters. Meridian make a range of natural nut butters including, Almond, Cashew, Hazelnut and even Pumpkin Seed Butter. Crunchy or smooth versions are available. Almond butter is my favourite and my eldest sons favourite too.
Almonds are a great source of energy, dietary fibre and protein and are also packed with vitamins and minerals, topping most other nuts when compared. They are a great source of Calcium (which is why I’m a big lover of them), Magnesium, Zinc, Iron and Potassium. They are low in saturated fat and high in monounsaturated fat which can help maintain healthy cholesterol. Studies have shown that almonds can help when it comes to weight loss too.
I love almonds so much that I have to make sure I measure out my portion sizes, otherwise I could quite happily munch my way through a whole bag. A serving size is about 25 grams.
Meridian Almond Butter can be found in most supermarkets. I know Ocado, Waitrose and Sainburys all stock it for sure as well as my local health food shop which stocks the whole Meridian range – including the pumpkin seed butter. Meridian Almond Butter costs around £2.39 but it is often on offer. Ingredients: Roasted Almonds (99.5%), Salt (0.5%) and that’s it!
Skip the butter and have it on toast or bread, stir it into porridge or top oatcakes or wholegrain rice cakes with it. Spread it on wholegrain pancakes or make tasty oat treats with it.
