Since cutting dairy out of my diet at the age of 12, I have tried a whole bunch of dairy free milk alternatives. Dairy gives me migraines and so I have had no choice but to find alternative milks that I can enjoy.
My favourite dairy free milks are:
- Oat Milk – My favourite for porridge and meusli
- Almond Milk – My favourite for cooking
- Rice Milk – A nice alternative for cereal
You can also buy:
- Hemp Milk
- Coconut Milk
- Other Nut Milks
- Soya Milk
I tend to stay away from Soya unless it is organic or fermented, but that is a personal choice. When choosing a dairy free milk it is important to ensure that you buy an unsweetened variety. Some of them are flavoured with sugar and other unnecessary things, which seems a little bit pointless to me!
You can buy most of the dairy free milks as UHT products but there are more and more making their way to the refrigerated section of the supermarkets. – Honestly, I have never really noticed a HUGE difference in the taste of UHT vs Fresh dairy free milks, but I would probably always prefer to buy the refrigerated one anyway.
These milks vary in price from £1 – £4. My favourite Oat and Almond milk are often on offer for £1 in the supermarkets so I stock up whilst I can. You can find most of these milks in your local supermarket or health food shop.
Even if you don’t have a dairy intolerance or allergy, you can still use these milks to change up your diet a little and reduce your intake of animal fat.
