I get a lot of people asking where they can find clean bread. I make my own bread in my bread maker, that way I know exactly what goes into it and it always tastes great but there are times when I run out of bread and need to dash to the supermarkets to grab some to tide me over until I have made another loaf.
I have made it my mission to source out the cleanest products available to purchase in the UK and I have found (potentially) the only ‘clean’ wholewheat loaf of bread available in the supermarkets.
Cranks Organic Wholemeal Bread is made up of just a handful of ingredients;
Organic Stoneground Wholemeal Flour, Water, Organic Wheat Gluten, Sea Salt, Yeast, Organic Sunflower Oil, Organic Bran.
That’s it! No sugar, no soya flour, no emulsifiers, no hydrogenated fats, no preservatives, no nasties! Just real, honest, natural ingredients.
Cranks Organic Wholemeal Bread can be purchased from Waitrose or Ocado and costs around £1.50. It is quite a dry, dense bread and it comes unsliced so I would recommend only slicing it thinly, but we all enjoy it and it tastes really great toasted.
I have also recently found a bakery which sell 100% clean wholemeal bread, even cleaner than Cranks. It’s called Hambleton Bakery and there are a few of them around the country. It is worth checking out your local bakery and asking to see if you can read the ingredients list of all of their fresh wholegrain breads.
If you are unable to make your own bread, or purchase a clean bread like Cranks or Hambleton’s then just go for the next best option. When choosing bread you want to look for something that is;
- Made from 100% Wholemeal Flour / Whole Wheat Flour
- Made without Added Sugar
- Made without Soya Flour unless Organic
- Made without Emulsifiers
- Made without Preservatives
If you can find a shop bought loaf of bread that ticks at least two of these boxes, it will be better than ticking none of them. Like with all Clean Eating foods, buy the best you can afford and the best that you have available to you. Don’t feel disheartened if it’s not 100% clean, just do the best you can and know that it will be doing your body more good than the other alternatives.
Helpful Info: You can find clean Rye Bread in a lot of supermarkets. My favourite brand is Biona. Their pumpkin seed rye bread is sooooo good toasted and topped with avocado and coconut oil fried eggs. When looking for rye bread check the ingredients list to make sure it is clean. You want it to be ‘wholegrain’ and without added sugar. Wholegrain corn cakes and wholegrain rice cakes are also a good substitute for bread.
Updated 7/1/15: It has become increasingly difficult to find clean pitta breads in the supermarkets which is such a shame because if it wasn’t for one little added preservative then these would be SO handy for clean eaters. These days I purchase my clean pitta bread from PlanetOrganic.com.
